Academic/Tutoring
ACCESS: Academic Therapy offers specialized tutoring for children with learning disabilities and provides an individualized approach specific to each student’s needs. The therapy addresses reading, spelling, comprehension, written expression, study skills and organizational strategies. Cost: $55-$65/hour.
APT Educational Services: Prescriptive tutoring is tailored to your child’s needs and delivered in a multisensory way to reach his/her learning style. Tutoring areas include: English, reading therapy, math, French, Latin, Spanish, writing process, handwriting, study skills, ACT and SAT prep, science, social studies, cognitive skills, and previews of next year’s subjects. Achievement testing compares your child’s skills in academic areas to national norms. Interested parents and teachers can also attend presentations and workshops on learning strategies to interested parents and teachers. Cost: $30-$45/hour.
Arkansas Extended Learning Center: The center offers classes for language and test preparation. Courses are also available to help cultivate new hobbies.
Gideon Math and Reading: Gideon Math & Reading has evolved into a full service center for anyone wanting help with learning. The center provides instruction in most subjects, including math, ACT preparation, reading, science and foreign languages. As of August 2013, Gideon will be a Dyslexia Screening Center. Cost: One-on-one tutoring $45/hour; Mastery learning program $100/month for math, $130/month for reading.
Huntington Learning Center: Huntington is your tutoring solution for elementary, middle and high school students. If your child struggles with homework, can’t keep up with classwork, or just wants to get ahead, Huntington can help diagnose what is keeping your child from being their best and create a program of instruction tailored to their needs. Huntington helps create refrigerator-worthy report cards. Cost: Cost is dependent upon the student’s grade level and initial academic evaluation.
LearningRx: Learning Rx provides cognitive skills training to improve intelligence and academic performance.
Oxford Learning Center in Conway: Supplemental educators or tutors focus on the basic academic skills or concentrate on the particular subject that is causing concern. ACT and SAT test prep courses are also offered. Cost: Preliminary assessment $150; tutoring sessions $40/hour; three options for ACT/SAT test prep.
Sylvan Learning Center: Sylvan knows that every child is unique, each with a different set of skills and academic needs. This is why the learning center designs a learning plan specifically for each child. After-school care
Adventureland Academy: Adventureland Academy offers after-school care for numerous public and private schools in the Little Rock area. The large gym offers a multitude of options to keep them occupied. There are after school snacks, homework assistance and reading tutoring with Wagging Tails Tutors. Registration deadline: Enrollment begins Aug. 1. Cost: $60/week, $25/day. Discounts available for siblings.
ASPire-North Little Rock Parks & Recreation: The After School Program (ASPire) is available at Glenview, North Heights and Sherman Park community centers. Children in grades K-5 participate in educational, health and fitness, and art activities at each center. Community center membership is required. Cost: $5/week or $15/month; Sibling discount and scholarships available.
First United Methodist Child Development Center: The after-school curriculum provides daily activities and play on the second floor fresh-air gymnasium, a USDA-approved snack, homework room and other enrichment options. Full care is provided to enrolled families for teacher workdays, Christmas, spring break and inclement weather.
North Little Rock Athletic Club: This state licensed after-school care program for children in grades K-6 is designed to exercise the mind and body of your child. The daily schedule includes fitness activities, cooperative games, homework, science experiments and snacks. Cost: Members $200/month; nonmembers $220/month; A 10% discount is available for additional siblings.
Enrichment
Central Arkansas Library System: The Central Arkansas Library System’s 14 branches all have after-school programs, including crafts, puppets, cooking classes, concerts, movies and more. Cost: All CALS programs are free.
William F. Laman Public Library System: Laman offers many recreational programs for families including Creation Station, Family Night, Fall Fest and others. Cost: Free.
Scouting
Boy Scouts of America: Scouting is a community-based program with over 90 individual programs throughout the city. Programs for boys go from first grade to 20 years old and girls 14 to 20 years old. Cost: Registration $15, uniform and handbook $75.
Girl Scouts-Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas: The traditional and most widely-known girl scouting experience is through the Girl Scout troops. These troops are led by well-trained adult volunteers. Girl scouting is also provided through a number of alternative venues, such as collaborations with other communities, youth-serving groups and during- and after-school programs. Registration deadline: Open registration; year starts Oct. 1. Cost: $12/year; $15/year starting Oct. 1; troop dues are decided among parents and troop leader.
YMCA Adventure Guides: The Adventure Guides program is aimed at children grades kindergarten to 3rd and works to strengthen the bond between fathers and sons.
