The Stone Drive-In Theater, 801 Theatre Lane, Mountain View, is one of the town's best-kept secrets and just one of only three drive-ins left in Arkansas.

It has been operated by the same family since it began in the 1960s.  Grandpa "Shorty", who later built the drive-in, used to go from town to town playing films from an old projector out of the back of his pickup truck.

While some of the new has rubbed off, the drive-in is the same as it was nearly 50 years ago and has since been passed down to his son, Bobby. The family-run operation continues to show movies at just $5 a pop.

The town's great American pastime, however, is in danger of closing down by the end of the year with the movie industry's switch from film to digital. You see, Stone Drive-In Theater is still using a 35mm projector for its films and because digital projection will cost upwards of $50,000, it will be a little hard to make that transition.

That's where you come in!

Project Drive-In is a national contest giving brand-new digital projectors to drive-ins in danger of closing due to the high cost of keeping up with the film companies. Rachel, the daughter of owner Bobby, signed up her father's life's work and took to Facebook to spread the word. The top five drive-ins in the country with the most votes win a new projector.

There are a couple of ways to vote:

  1. Text Vote19 to 444999
  2. Online here

You can vote once each way for just three more days. The deadline is 9 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 21).

And, the project is also taking contributions to help keep the classic part of American preserved. Contribute here.
