5 Things To Check Off Your August To-Do List
Last chance for summer fun? Here are five things to check off your summer bucket list before the kids head back to school this month.
1. Make a Splash
If you haven’t cooled down at Magic Springs Water & Theme Park or Wild River Country on a scorching day, don’t miss your last few chances. Both parks will cut back their hours mid-month, but won’t close for the season until Sept. 2. Take one last dip in the Lazy River or the Tad Pool at Wild River Country. Or, after chilling out at Magic Springs Water & Theme Park, attend the Hello Kitty Back to School Bash and the Coco Jones concert on Aug. 17. The 15-year-old singer and star of Disney Channel movie “Let It Shine” will perform songs from her debut EP, “Made Of.”
2. Get Carded
Library Carded, that is. If you missed the libraries’ summer reading programs, your family can still get in on the literary fun. William F. Laman Library will celebrate the end of their summer programs and get kids ready to go back to school at Lamanpalooza, held outside the library from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 2. The free event will have a carnival atmosphere with tons of fun for families, including live music from Kemistri featuring Nicky Parrish, bounce houses, games, crafts, prizes and giveaways, and food available for purchase.
3. Root, Root, Root for the Home Team
It’s the last full month for Travelers baseball at Dickey-Stephens Park. The team will play its final home game of the season on Sept. 2, but August offers plenty of opportunities to catch a few innings before then. Take advantage of serious ticket discounts on Aug. 4 and 18 during the Family Sunday games. Simply bring your church bulletin to the box office for $10 admission for the entire family. Or, enjoy post-game entertainment on special game days: On Aug. 3, American Idol’s Colton Dixon plays a concert, and on Aug. 31, the park presents a fireworks show.
4. Watch Film Stars (Under the Stars)
You have one last chance to catch a free, outdoor flick at the First Security Amphitheatre, when Movies in the Park ends its season on Aug. 7. And it’s good news for superhero fans—the evening’s feature is “The Avengers,” the 2012 blockbuster that flaunts the earth-saving team of Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye. The park opens at 6:30 p.m.; film begins at sundown.
5. Fiesta at a Foodie Festival
Take your pick between three tasty festivals around Arkansas the weekend of Aug. 8-10: Stomp the grapes at the 115th Annual Tontitown Grape Festival; compete in watermelon eating and seed-spitting contests at the 37th Annual Hope Watermelon Festival; or play watermelon games and feast on free fruit at the 34th Annual Cave City Watermelon Festival.
