Entries Sought for Discovery Education Challenge
Students in grades 5-8 are invited to enter the 13th annual Discovery Education and 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This competition for middle school students requires a video submission that explains the science behind a solution to an everyday problem, for example, “how to create greener transportation,” “how to detect/prevent food poisoning,” or “how to protect people in an emergency.”
Videos will be evaluated on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras. Ten finalists will be chosen to work directly with a 3M Scientist to create an innovation that they will present at the 3M Innovation Center for the chance to win $25,000.
Videos must be submitted online at YoungScientistChallenge.com by April 15. Discovery Education is a branch of Discovery Communications and Discovery Channel. The company seeks to combine scientifically proven, standards-based digital media and a dynamic user community in order to empower teachers to improve student achievement. 3M is an innovation company that transforms new ideas into thousands of ingenious products.
