This year, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center is celebrating Juneteenth in true 2020 fashion––virtually. This annual event commemorates African American freedom in the United States and, as people around the world stand in unity against racism, could there be a better time to celebrate this historic occasion?

A Little History

  • Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and is the oldest, most widely known celebration in the country.

  • The origin of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to share the news that slaves had been freed.

  • Parades and speeches in Arkansas held in celebration of emancipation date back to 1873.
