It's a beautiful day today, which prompted me to walk to the River Market for lunch with a coworker. We chose 4square Gifts, the new store/restaurant adjacent to the Arkansas Studies Institute. I'd heard about the place from fellow vegetarians and have been looking forward  to trying it.

The space is bright and airy. The walls are lined with shelves displaying locally made jams, jellies, spices, sauces and snacks. There's also a nice selection of Arkansas souvenirs.

The small deli counter and kitchen serve fresh vegetarian soups, sandwiches, salads and wraps. There's also a refrigerated section with grab-n-go items. I snagged a cold chickpea salad from the case. It's heavy on the chickpeas and includes zucchini, tomatoes, cilantro and potatoes, all tossed in a light dressing. Very tasty.

I ordered a hummus and portabello wrap from the counter, which I am enjoying as I write. The hummus is made with spinach, which gives it a distinct flavor. The wrap is packed with shredded carrots, sprouts, roasted bell peppers and portabello mushrooms — a terrific combination. It's served on a spinach tortilla. I'd prefer a plain one, since there's spinach in the hummus, but it's still good.

There are a few table tops in the shop, but 4square is really a to-go place. Other menu items include smoothies, ice cream, and speciality coffees. Lunch choices include egg salad sandwiches, grilled panini, and an Asian wrap loaded with veggies and dressed with peanut sauce. All sandwiches come with a small fountain drink, so it's economical as well as healthy.

4square is located at 405 President Clinton Ave. Call ahead and they'll prepare it for pick-up: (501) 291-1764.
