Summer travels have come to a close, but many families have plans for tropical vacations during upcoming holiday breaks.

Like any time you leave the country, it's important to be aware of health and safety precautions and make sure your family is educated and prepared.

In particular, there are a few things women should know about the Zika virus when traveling, especially if an upcoming pregnancy could be in the cards.

1. Zika virus can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. So, if you’re thinking about having a baby, wait at least eight weeks after your symptoms started or six months after your male partner’s symptoms started before trying to get pregnant.

2. Infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.

3. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika.

Zika virus is prevalent in Mexico, the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and many other countries, so be especially aware if you are traveling to one of these places.
