3 Ways to Make Kids' Lives Better in November
1. Volunteer with Arkansas Foodbank
Just about nothing is sadder than a hungry child. So the Arkansas Foodbank is doing its part with Kid Cafe, a U.S. Department of Agriculture after-school feeding program that nourishes children in 33 counties in central and southern Arkansas. Last school year, the Arkansas Foodbank distributed 100,380 pounds of of food to Kid Cafe sites in its area, where more than 86,000 children face the prospect of going hungry. The after-school site in Little Rock is at Harvest Fellowship, 9010 Hilaro Springs Road, where nutritious snacks are served at 3 p.m. and supper is at 5:30 p.m. during the school year. To volunteer, donate or get an after-school meal site started in your community, contact Keitha McGhee at (501) 569-4327 or KMcGhee@ArkansasFoodBank.org.
2. Help a Kid Make A Wish
Make-A-Wish has been making the world better for children with life-threatening health conditions for more than 30 years, often with dream-come-true experiences shortly before young lives come to an end. To further that cause, country star and Arkansas native Justin Moore will perform at the Evening of Wishes, beginning at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Albert Pike Masonic Center, 712 Scott St. in Little Rock. Tickets for the event, which benefits Make-A-Wish Mid-South, are $150, and activities will include a live and silent auction, as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres and the concert. For more information, contact the Make-A-Wish Little Rock office at (501) 376-9474.
3. Take Part in the Vera Lloyd Turkey Trot
The Vera Lloyd Turkey Trot 5K is a great way to help kids in foster care, but the race, along with a one-mile “fun run” for those under 12, isn’t exactly a sprint from Little Rock. The event, at 8 a.m. Nov. 19, is at the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services center in Monticello, about a 90-minute drive away. The good news is that those who can’t make it down to Drew County can participate closer to home in two different ways — by signing up for a virtual race before Nov. 21 and receiving a T-shirt, or by taking part in the Turkey Trot’s Little Rock celebration Nov. 2 at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church. That event, at 6400 Kavanaugh Blvd., will feature dinner and a silent auction. All proceeds go toward improving the lives of youths in foster care. For more information, go to the Vera Lloyd website.
