It’s not exactly the zombie apocalypse, but the “undead” will be on the prowl at the Little Rock Zoo from Oct. 21-31 during this year’s Boo at the Zoo, a Halloween tradition with a few new twists this year.

But don’t fear, you can have a paintball gun for protection. Zombie paintball is the newest feature of Boo at the Zoo. Celebrating its 25th year, the annual event is the largest Halloween lights festival in the state and organizers are promising more thrills and chills than ever before.

“Each year, we try to add something new, but this year holds special meaning for the Zoo. Not only are we celebrating 25 years of Boo at the Zoo, but the Zoo itself is in its 90th year,” said Susan Altrui, assistant zoo director. “To observe these milestones, we have bigger rides – you’ll be able to see them from Interstate 630 – and this year’s event will be more inclusive with something for every family member from the youngest to the oldest.”

Latricia Allen, the zoo’s special events planner, said some event mainstays are getting upgrades.

“We usually have a hay bale maze, but this year, we’ve partnered with the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and they’re designing the maze,” Allen said.

“I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

AIA member Heather Davis said guests should “expect the unexpected.”

“It will be unique. As architects, we really get excited about finding creative ways to use simple building materials,” Davis said. “From the first mention of the opportunity, our group was eager to participate. The Little Rock Zoo is a valuable resource for our community and we are very thankful to have the opportunity to lend our skills to this fun and playful project. We hope our design will facilitate a fun, exciting experience for kids while also providing a chance for adults to feel a bit like kids again.”

Oct. 21 is Adult Night, and parents may want to book babysitters now.

On this night guests age 21 and up can trick-or-treat for fun libations and candy and enjoy attractions like the Haunted Train and Haunted House.

There will also be rides, games and a costume contest at the amphitheater stage. Live music will keep the mood upbeat, and food trucks will be ready to feed your inner monster (not included in cost of admission).

General admission tickets are on sale at a discounted rate of $15 each through Oct. 21. Zoo members can purchase general admission tickets during that period for $10. Visit LittleRockZoo.com or purchase in advance at the gate. For adult night, advance tickets are $25 for non-members and $20 for members. At 4 p.m. on Oct. 21, gate prices kick in and all tickets will be $5 more.
