News, accomplishments and more from central Arkansas Schools

Little Rock School District’s Hall High School scored a sweet speaker in late January: Hall High graduate and former member of the New England Patriots, Chris Akins, gave a presentation on work ethic, staying away from drugs and gangs, and the importance of education in his life. He also presented the school with an honor from the NFL, which celebrated this year’s Super Bowl by sending a gold football to every high school that’s produced a player or coach who’s appeared in a Super Bowl. Akins played in 2003 with the Patriots and Hall’s Leslie O’Neal played in 1989 for the San Diego Chargers.

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra hosted Music Alive: New Partnerships Composer-in-Residence Dan Visconti in a week-long residency that culminated in a performance of his work for central Arkansas audiences in late January. During Visconti’s residency, he lectured at Cabot High School, taught science and music classes at Episcopal Collegiate School and taught science at e-STEM.

Early in the semester, fourth graders at Little Rock School District’s Don Roberts Elementary School had a complete “Ellis Island Simulation Experience,” from the baggage room to the medical room. In a recreation of the full immigration process, students experienced the journey that thousands of immigrants endured in their quest to be granted admission to the United States.
