1. Spelling counts. Nothing makes a poorer impression than not being able to distinguish between "you're" and "your."

2. No photography is better than bad photography. You don't need a fancy camera. Turn off the flash button, use natural light, and get close to your subject.

3. Avoid a busy layout with lots of widgets. Few of us will wait longer than five seconds for a page to load.

4. Allow your posts to be read in entirety on a syndicated reader, like Google's (Reader.Google.com). Chances are low that anyone will click through on a teaser to see the rest of your post.

5. Boundaries around sharing are something every new blogger has to figure out for themselves. As a general rule of thumb, don't post anything you wouldn't say in an offline conversation in a public space.

6. Understand that you won't please all people all of the time or some of them any of the time. If you can't tolerate rejection and disapproval, writing is probably not for you.
