Thinking of going green this Halloween? A few places in SoMa can help.

This week, the Green Corner Store, 1423 Main St., #D, Little Rock, is having a Green Halloween Costume Contest, as well as a Costume Swap just before the super-fun A La Mode, Halloween Edition in cooperation with its soda fountain Loblolly Creamery and Studio Main, 1423 Main St.

The eco-friendly costume contest judging will be Thursday-Friday (Oct. 24-25) and prizes will be presented at 6 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 26) at the store. Prizes will be awarded for children, teens, adults and pets. The deadline to enter was Wednesday (Oct. 23).

And come Saturday (Oct. 26), there will be a costume swap from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Studio Main, where you can bring gently used costumes and pick up new ones for free.

It's just in time for the parade at 6 p.m., leaving from the Green Corner Store, around Bernice Garden up to Community Bakery and back to the Green Corner Store, and special A La Mode, Halloween Harvest Edition, happening from 6-8 p.m. at the Green Corner Store and Soda Fountain. Loblolly will be dishing up yummy Little Rock Pie Cycle hand pies with a scoop of their delicious handcrafted ice cream. The menu will include Halloween- and autumn harvest-themed flavors like a pecan pie with a scoop of cookies & scream.

There will also be pie treats for the gluten-free and vegan crowd. It will be just $4 for all offerings.  To start the night off, there will be a pie walk (just like a cake walk, but you can win a free pint of ice cream or bag of free mini-pies). Also have a chance to listen to spooky music and watch entertainers from ReCreation Studios perform with hula hoops.

The first 50 Loblolly/Pie Cycle fans will receive a free Halloween magical artifact.

Need some help going green? Green Corner Store offers a few tips:

  • Instead of junk food, hand out pencils made from recycled paper or wood.
  • Decorate with nature. A trip to your yard or the farmers market will provide everything you need to dress up your home: leaves, branches, hay bales, gourds, pumpkins, mums, dried flowers.
  • Save for next year. When Halloween is over, pack up costumes, treat bags, lights and decorations in one box or bag.
  • Skip the plastic pumpkin. Trick-or-treat with reusable canvas bags.
