World Championship Cardboard Boat Races in Heber Springs Saturday
It's that time of the year again when cardboard boat-building skills are putting to the test in the most unique of ways.
If you're up around Greers Ferry Lake, stop by the 27th World Championship Cardboard Boat Races, which will be taking over Sandy Beach in Heber Springs tomorrow (July 27).
With the theme "Sailing with Superheroes," you'll find everything from rafts to canoes to monster trucks to space ships hitting the waters.
Of course, it's too late to register for races, but the races and fun activities happening on land are open to the public. Here is a rundown of the schedule tomorrow:
- Races at 10 a.m.
- Treasure Dig at 10 a.m.
- Watermelon Eating Contest at 11 a.m.
- Volleyball Tournament at 10 a.m. (register at 9 a.m.)
In addition to the winners of the races, there will be a few special awards given out for creativity, engineering and even the most dramatic sinking. The Captain’s Award will be given to the most creative team and boat, while some of the engineered marvels will compete for the coveted Pride of the Fleet Award. For those that sink in dramatic fashion, there's a Titanic Award for that.
There will also be the 2nd Annual Anne Pressly Memorial Celebrity Race with on-air talent from Little Rock market news stations.
Boat builders and racers come from all over the United States for the races and the annual event has received national coverage through magazines, newspapers, ESPN, ESPN II, Over the Edge, the Outdoor Channel, the Discovery Channel, Fox Sports Network and German TV.
