5 Arkansas Road Trips for the Whole Family
Summer weekends mean getaways with the whole family. Not sure where your road trip should take you? Here are five great destinations in Arkansas to check out as summer comes to a close. For more info, check out this article from our sister publication, Little Rock Soirée.
1. Ponca
Summer may just be the best time to head up to this beautiful part of the state because of the picturesque and floatable Buffalo National River. Get the whole family outfitted and rent boats at the Buffalo Outdoor Center. Ponca is also known for its hiking trails and the gorgeous outlook at Hawksbill Crag.
2. Bentonville
Explore this fast-growing city with a walk through the free art museum, Crystal Bridges. With outdoor sculptures and trails, even the kids will stay interested. While you're in town, visit the Walmart Museum on the square and stop by the ice cream shop for a double scoop cone. If you're willing to leave the city for a few hours, head to the Wild Wilderness Drive-through Safari in Gentry, only about 30 minutes away. There, you'll see zebras, lions, camels, emus and many other animals up close and personal as they walk up to your car window and you interact with them in the petting zoo area.
3. Hot Springs
Summer means temperatures in the 90s for a few months in Arkansas. And what better way to cool off than to head to the lake? There are three in Hot Springs, all with boat rentals available — from kayaks to ski boats. Lake Catherine is best known for its fishing opportunities while National Park Duck Tours and the Belle of Hot Springs riverboat operate on Lake Hamilton. Lake Ouachita is Arkansas’ largest lake and one of the cleanest in the country. Just remember to put safety first when you're out on the lake — sunscreen and life jackets are essential.
4. Paris
Mount Magazine State Park features the state's tallest mountain, rising 2,753 feet over the Petit Jean River valley. The park offers tons of family-friendly activities including hawk watches and guided hikes. Make a full weekend out of it by camping — just make sure to book your campsite online before you go and read up on bear safety.
5. Eureka Springs
Lions and tigers and bears — oh yes. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge opened its doors in 1992 to provide a safe sanctuary for big cats across the country. At the refuge, you’ll see big cats in their element enjoying the great Arkansas outdoors. Kids will love watching the tigers cool off in swimming pools during the hot summer months.
