Historic Sites Offer Families a Way to Celebrate Black History Month
Black History Month (February) reminds families to celebrate the accomplishments of the black community. Little Rock Central High School and the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center are two sites that offer tours, allowing families to learn about history right here in central Arkansas.
Little Rock Central High School is the site of the 1957 desegregation crisis. The integration of the Little Rock Nine was one of the most prominent examples of the implementation of Brown v. Board of Education.
The site offers two tours a day with access inside the school Monday through Friday with streetscape tours Saturday and Sunday. The National Park Service requests registration 24 hours in advance for the tours. Call (501) 374-1957 to register.
Another tour that offers great historical perspective is at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. Groups of 10 or more can schedule a tour in advance by filling out a form on the website. Self-guided tours are available for smaller groups.
Important African American Arkansans like Scipio A. Jones, Chester Keats, John Bush and Abraham and Eliza Miller are featured in the tours. For more information, call the education director at (501) 683-3592 or email her.
