LRSD Students Submit School Bus Drawings

The primary color is likely to be yellow as Little Rock School District elementary students are invited to enter an art contest sponsored by First Student, the nation’s leading provider of school bus transportation.

Students are asked to submit one art entry each showing happiness on the bus. The art can depict friendships, reading on the bus, or even the bus driver – or turn wherever the student’s imagination drives it – as long as a First Student school bus is somewhere in the picture.

The winning entry will receive a classroom donation of $1,000. Entries must be sent by Sept. 2 to First Student Inc., 600 Vine Street, Suite 1400, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45202. Attention: Marketing. Full rules are available on the Little Rock School District website.

School Supplies Drive

Our House, the Little Rock homeless shelter and resource, is accepting donations of school supplies for 150 homeless and near-homeless students through Aug. 15. Caitlin Selakovich of the shelter’s Children’s Program VISTA suggests wide- and college-ruled paper, color-coded dividers, one- and two-inch binders, clear or mesh backpacks and flash drives. She says colored pencils and markers are better than crayons. A fuller list can be found on the LRSD website.

Items can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays at the Our House Children’s Center at 302 E. Roosevelt Road in Little Rock. An employee at the guard shack will offer directions. For further information, contact Selakovich at 374-7383, extension 140. Selakovich’s email address is Kids3@OurHouseShelter.org.

Student Government

A Senator became a student governor recently at Boys State, an immersive summer program in civics education designed for high school juniors and sponsored by the American Legion at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. The “Senator” was Myles Fells of Joe T. Robinson High School, who was elected Boys State governor by his fellow delegates. Myles plays football and soccer for Joe T. Robinson, whose teams are known as the Senators.
